Board of Education Honors Fall Athletic Champions

Today the Board of Education recognized three athletic teams for winning state championships during the fall season.

Dr. Daniel D. Curry, Superintendent, said, “It has been a great year for our female athletes. They are fast and strong and love to win.”

The girls soccer teams from Calvert High and Northern High won the 2019 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 2A and 3A State Championships, respectively. On the way to states, Calvert won the Class 2A South Regional Championship for the sixth time. The team is under the leadership of head coach John A. Baker II and assistant coaches Tracey Williams and Brandon Owens. The Northern Patriots defended their 2018 title to become the school’s first team to win consecutive state championships since the inception of the girls soccer program. The team won the 2019 Class 3A South Regional Championship for the third time in four years and is coached by John P. Battle and assistant coaches Shaun Nicholson, Rowena Conway and Alissa Spencer.

The Northern High School girls cross country team won the 2019 Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 3A Championship for an impressive fourth consecutive year. The team, with a 73-straight league meet winning streak, won the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) Championship for the fifth consecutive year. The runners are coached by Josh Dawson, head coach, and assistant coaches Kevin Delamer, Hayden Tranter and Andy Cerrito.
